CCTV Full Form - Closed Circuit Television
CCTV
- Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) also referred to as video surveillance. It's a system where all the elements like video camera, display monitors, recording devices are directly connected.
- It's used to monitor a sensitive area (a specific area which needs continuous observation and where there's nobody to watch all the time).
- It's very helpful to stop crime because it monitors all the activities and record them. It's also used for traffic monitoring by detecting congestion and notice accidents.
- CCTV uses wired or wireless transmission to send the signals or broadcast to the monitor or recording device.
- It can transmit video, audio or both. Advanced CCTV cameras even have night-sight capabilities to record low light images. The CCTV signal aren't publically distributed but are monitored for security purposes.
History of CCTV
- An early mechanical CCTV system was developed in June 1927 by Russian physicist Léon Theremin (cf. Television within the Soviet Union).
- Originally requested by the Soviet of Labor and Defense, the system consisted of a manually-operated scanning-transmitting camera and wireless shortwave transmitter and receiver, with a resolution of 100 lines.
- Having been commandeered by Kliment Voroshilov, Theremin's CCTV system was demonstrated to joseph stalin, Semyon Budyonny, and Sergo Ordzhonikidze, and subsequently installed within the courtyard of the Moscow Kremlin to watch approaching visitors.
- Another early CCTV system was installed by Siemens AG at Test Stand VII in Peenemünde, nazi germany in 1942, for observing the launch of V-2 rockets.
- In the U.S. the primary commercial television system became available in 1949, called Vericon. Little is understood about Vericon except it had been advertised as not requiring a government permit.
Basic Components of CCTV
- Security Cameras (Analog or Digital)
- Cables (RJ45 or RJ59 Cables)
- Video Recorders (DVR or NVR)
- Storage Unit (usually a Hard Disk)
- Display Unit (optional, usually a monitor)

- Building and Residential Apartments
- Corporate Houses
- Banks
- Shops and multiplexes
- Casinos
- Government Offices and Buildings
- Airports and Railway Stations
- Industrial plants etc.
The first CCTV was installed at Test Stand VII in Peenemunde in Germany. It had been installed by Siemens AG. The credit of technological design and installation of this system goes to a German engineer Walter Bruch.
Benefits of CCTV
- CCTV systems are great deterrent to thieves. Once a thief realize that he's under surveillance of CCTV, he will prefer to go elsewhere.
- It are often used as a best choice for home security.
- It facilitates remote monitoring.
- It increases the business efficiency and improves profitability.
- It reduces the fear of crime.
- It also increases the risks for shop lifters.
